Photo Essay : Primo Writer ( Exhibited in Marseilles, Paris and Amsterdam) Primo Writer was an initiative comprising workshops and exhibitions specifically tailored for young "primo arrivants" (newcomers) in Marseille's public schools. Among the participants were Mohamed, Rupi, Fatima, and Ania, students from the "Oddo Madrague" primary school. Each child had a unique story and distinct dreams.
Mohamed, having recently arrived in France, aspired to become a soccer player. Rupi, aged 13, was attending school for the first time, having spent most of his life begging on Marseille's streets. However, he was now highly motivated to learn to read.
These children received additional support to enhance their French language skills. Through a photography workshop, they explored concepts such as framing and composition, engaging in dialogue while viewing a diverse array of images. This served as a powerful incentive for them to practice speaking French and develop their writing abilities. At the conclusion of the workshop, the children were tasked with writing about their hopes and frustrations, followed by the capture of their personal portraits. Each child selected an object symbolizing their aspirations to discuss alongside their portrait. Some choices were particularly poignant, such as bringing a cherished family member because of their love for them. The subsequent exhibitions not only showcased the children's work but also facilitated improved relationships between teachers, parents, and communities. Presented multiple times and even featured in heritage events (Journees du Patrimoine), these exhibitions marked memorable occasions for the children and their families.
